The challenge
A high reliability organisation is one that is able to manage
and sustain almost error-free performance despite operating in
hazardous conditions where the consequences of errors could be
catastrophic.
In order to become highly reliable, an organisation not only
values and encourages learning from its own experiences, but looks
beyond itself for lessons, avoids complacency and is highly
reflective on what it can proactively do to become better.
The solution
In its quest to become such an organisation, Cadent, the UK's
largest gas distribution network, worked with HSE to devise a
bespoke 3 day training programme for its senior management team to
equip them with the regulatory insight, human factors knowledge and
behavioural awareness required in order to lead a highly reliable
organisation.
HSE prepared a series of highly interactive technical workshops,
which also included time for a number of separate sessions
delivered and organised by Cadent. The workshops covered a range of
health and safety topics and insights, with all delegates
successfully completing the HSE NEBOSH Certificate in Health and
Safety Leadership Excellence.
The workshops were delivered by a number of HSE experts, who
were able to bring the topics to life by sharing real life,
thought-provoking examples that not only demonstrated the
importance of leadership, but also explained how managers are able
to influence health and safety performance and culture through
their own actions and behaviours.
The training took place at the world renowned HSE Science and
Research Centre in Buxton, Derbyshire and Cadent's time at the
facility was enhanced with visits to HSE's engineering and incident
laboratories.
The outcome
Dave Garner, who is the Director for Safety, Health and
Environment at Cadent , explains why he chose to invest in his
senior leadership team by training with HSE:
" We wanted a training provider who could provide valuable
real world insights and experiences together with a great mix of
theory, practice and experiential input. That could only come from
the regulator, HSE.
At the end of the 3 days, my colleagues had a completely
differently mindset to when they started: people walked away
feeling differently about our undertaking and their role within it,
which was the primary aim of our time with you. We also have a plan
of action that will help us to improve how we manage both process
safety and safety more generally within the organisation.
Many thanks for a great event and experience."
