Organic analyses
HSE is constantly improving current assays and developing new
assays for the measurement of chemicals to support occupational
exposure monitoring in various industrial sectors.
Routine organic analyses we carry out include:
- Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on thermal desorption tube
(MDHS
104, UKAS accredited)
- Formaldehyde on filters (MDHS
102, UKAS accredited)
- Isocyanate on filters (MDHS
25)
- Solder fume (MDHS
83)
- Environmental tobacco smoke
- Polymer identification
- Weld through emissions (ISO
15011-5)
- Diacetyl from food flavouring, fragrances and coffee

Solvent or VOC exposure monitoring via simple diffusive
sampling can help ensure that your control measures are
working. Several types of diffusive sampling devices are available
including the thermal desorption (TD) tube (shown below) which has
been used for workplace air monitoring by HSE for many years.
As diffusive samplers do not require a sampling pump they are much
easier to use and more reliable than pumped samplers. TD
tubes in particular are also small and unobtrusive to wear and can
be used to sample a wide range of VOCs with parts per billion (ppb)
limits of detection. Pricing
structures from single solvents and standard benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) analysis to multiple component
solvent monitoring are available.
