10 March 2025 - 13 March 2025
Introduction
Effective process safety management is a blend of engineering
and management skills and is of vital importance in major hazard
industries to prevent catastrophic accidents and near misses
associated with loss of containment of energy or dangerous
substances.
Process risks that are effectively controlled help to optimise
business efficiency, reduce downtime and protect people and assets,
as well as business reputation.
But process safety management isn't just the job of the process
safety specialist. It's important that all managers, supervisors
and safety professionals working in these industries possess an
understanding of process safety to allow them to manage their
responsibilities effectively.
Developed by NEBOSH and HSE, the NEBOSH HSE Certificate in
Process Safety Management is a four-day course followed by a formal
assessment to give managers, supervisors and safety professionals
working in high hazard industries a broad understanding of the
accepted principles and recognised industrial practices for the
management of process risk.
The knowledge gained from this qualification will allow them to
recognise and contribute to the control of process safety hazards
and make a real impact across their organisation. The course
provides a wide-ranging introduction to process safety management.
It also provides an introduction to common hazards found in the
process industries.
Learning outcomes
Delegates will be provided with information that will help them
to:
- Understand process safety management to ensure that they can
contribute to the effective management of process safety risks
- Be able to describe the main elements of a process safety
management system and why each element is important
- Have an appreciation of how to establish process safety
management systems and the performance standards for safety
critical systems and equipment
- Understand hazards and controls for chemical reactions, bulk
storage of dangerous substances, fire and explosion
What the course will cover
This course gives a wide-ranging introduction to process safety
management. It introduces the key elements of a process safety
management system and facilitates an understanding of why each of
the elements is important. Other topics introduced on this course
include asset management and maintenance strategies, safe start-up
and shutdown of process plant, and performance standards for safety
critical systems and equipment. Delegates will examine hazards and
controls for chemical reactions, bulk storage of dangerous
substances, and fire and explosion, along with the purpose and
features of emergency plans.
The course is delivered by HSE experts who have a wide range of
process safety experience gained through HSE's activities in the
onshore chemical and offshore oil and gas industries.
Download the learner guide here.
How is the qualification assessed?
Delegates are assessed by a 90 minute multiple choice
examination, which must be accessed and completed via NEBOSH's
Online Assessment Platform within a 24-hour window. The date is set
by NEBOSH and will be within 4 weeks of attending the course.
Who should attend?
This qualification is ideal for those who are new to or have
some experience and knowledge (building on level 2 knowledge) of
process safety, including:
- people with a background in occupational health and safety, but
working in or moving into a high hazard process industry;
- people moving into a safety career from, for example, a plant
operation or maintenance background;
- graduates starting a career in a process industry; and
- people whose main role is not safety related but need to know
about process safety, e.g. shift supervisors, maintenance engineers
or new plant managers.
This qualification is not designed for process safety or
chemical engineers with extensive operational experience of working
within the processing environment.
It is advised that delegates should have some prior knowledge of
health and safety issues and concepts.
